Gunthers Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing has served American Fork and the surrounding areas since 1910. Our company highly recommends furnaces as a means of heating homes, but we know that some homeowners have concerns about them, so we want to address them.

Furnaces Are Not Inherently Unhealthy

Furnaces sometimes get a bad rap but are not really any more dangerous than heat pumps and other heating technologies. There may be fewer concerns when it comes to electric furnaces, but the added considerations are generally well worth the savings that come with natural gas, oil or propane.

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector

The biggest health concern when it comes to gas furnaces, in particular, is carbon monoxide poisoning, and this is true of gas stoves and other gas-based appliances. However, such leaks are increasingly rare as technology has improved. Nevertheless, it is imperative that anyone who has gas appliances in their homes installs a carbon monoxide alarm and tests it on a regular basis.

Reduced Indoor Air Quality

Gas and even electric furnaces that are not performing well can let off pollutants and contaminants that can degrade your indoor air quality. However, you can avoid such problems by scheduling a seasonal tune-up of your furnace as well as an assessment of your ventilation every several years or so.

Dry Air

All types of heating can lead to dry air in the home, and most furnaces have an onboard humidifier to offset this effect. If you are experiencing static electricity, skin irritations or breathing issues, you can opt for whole-home or room-based humidifiers to mitigate this byproduct even further.

Replacing Old Furnaces

Most furnaces will easily last 15 years or more, which makes them a great value. After that point, homeowners should strongly consider replacing them for more energy-efficient technologies. With a newer furnace, you won’t have to worry about frequent repairs either.
