Most households use a significant amount of energy each season whether they want to illuminate specific rooms of the home or cool the interior setting during the warmer months of the year. Unfortunately, the cost of energy isn’t always cheap here in American Fork, Utah, and can lead to high bills each month. If you want to save more energy throughout the year, here are a few basic tips to follow.

1. Close Your Drapes

One of the main reasons air conditioners work harder than necessary is due to a warm interior setting. Make it a point to close your drapes or blinds to help prevent heat from transferring through the windows during the warmest parts of the day. Blackout curtains are beneficial and will prevent natural sunlight from filtering into the building. You can also keep the blinds open during the winter season to allow the natural light to heat each room in the home.

2. Use Ceiling Fans

The most expensive way to cool your house is by relying on the air conditioner. Instead, begin turning on the ceiling fans, which will circulate air in each room and use less energy to operate. Opening the windows while relying on the fans will prove to be useful on days that aren’t overly hot.

3. Unplug Appliances

Plenty of energy is wasted due to appliances that are plugged in when they’re not in use. Form a habit of unplugging products like your computer or coffee maker when they’re not in use each day. Using power strips will also allow you to shut off the power to different devices with a push of a button for added convenience.

4. Use Cold Water

Residents often use more hot water than necessary whether it’s to wash the dishes or their clothes. Using cold water will prevent using extra energy with the water heater. Insulate the water heater to prevent heat loss and be sure to install a water heater that doesn’t use a pilot light.
