If your home is leaking air, it’s costing you a lot of money. When you heat or cool your house, you want that warm or cool air to stay in your home to bring the temperature to a comfortable level. If you suspect a leak, then there are several areas inside and outside of your home that you should check.

Exterior Places to Check

The basic idea when looking at your exterior is to look for areas where two different building materials meet. Make sure to check these areas thoroughly:

  • Where your chimney meets your siding
  • Where your foundation meets the house
  • Any outdoor faucets
  • All corners

If you’re performing this check at night, you can shine a light into these gaps. Have a person inside the home watch in a darkened room. If he or she sees the light shining through, then you know there’s air leakage.

Interior Places to Check

Checking the interior for leaks will likely take longer than the exterior because there are more potential problem areas. Make sure to look at each of these areas:

  • All door and window frames
  • Electrical outlets and switch plates
  • Entrances for gas and electrical lines, including cable TV and phone lines
  • Weatherstripping and baseboards
  • Dampers on the fireplace
  • Air conditioners that are mounted in the wall or a window
  • Vents and fans, including the outlet for the dryer vent
  • Attic hatches

For windows and doors, try rattling them. If they move rather easily, it’s likely there’s an air leak around them. Also, if you can see daylight around the frame, they may need weatherstripping or caulking to become airtight.
